Friday, July 10 2020 – As if the year wasn’t already a dumpster fire. I finished mowing the yard and went out with the weed whip to do the trimming. Upon returning to the shed, I found this….
Kim called 911 as I turned a hose on the fire. I had no expectation of putting it out, but I did want to keep it from the house. If I could just keep the fire down a little.
The Brighton Area Fire Department rolled up 7 minutes after we started the phone call. Given that we are 5 miles from the department, that was an absolutely spectacular response time. They took over my hose, I gave them a second hose, and they rolled out their 2″ line and snuffed the remaining fire in another 20 minutes.
Next is the insurance claim. Initial contact with AAA was very easy and quick. I had an adjuster out here just a couple days later, and I was already preparing a spreadsheet. We have replacement insurance, so I am replacing nearly everything that was destroyed. I had a replacement lawn mower the day after the fire. I ordered the new shed on Monday. With the delays that COVID-19 has put on everything, I do not yet have an install date for the shed. I’m really not expecting it before September, but I could be wrong. In either direction! We did opt for a slightly larger shed. More importantly, we’re putting it 70 feet away from the house. The old shed was built before we put the addition on the house and was now only 10 feet from our porch and bedroom. Too close!
